Robert Swan Aitchison trained in Edinburgh, earning his MB CM in 1882 and his MD in 1896. He served as Examiner for the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Physician to the New Town Dispensary, and Medical Officer for Out-Patients at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. He later became Consulting Physician at St Cuthbert's Hospital, a predecessor of the Western General Hospital. He authored 'A Medical Handbook for Students', which reached its sixth edition in 1919. He retired in 1914 and died in Ifield, Sussex, in 1937.
