Robert Spittal

Robert Spittal was born in 1804. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh from 1824 to 1825 and was apprenticed in 1826 to Dr Liston of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He received his MD from Giessen on 11 March 1832 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh on 6 May 1834. Spittal held posts including physician's assistant, physician to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, physician to the Royal Public Dispensary and Physician Extraordinary to the Queen in Scotland. He published numerous papers and the book 'A Treatise on Auscultation Illustrated by Cases and Dissections' in 1830. Spittal served as President of the Plinian Society and the Edinburgh Hunterian Medical Society and died in Edinburgh on 7 April 1852 at the age of forty-eight.
