Robert Renton

Robert Renton was born in 1794 and began studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh in 1809. In 1810 he was apprenticed to Dr Gordon at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He qualified MD in 1814 and published 'Disputatio physiologica inauguralis de digestione'. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1822. Renton practised as a surgeon in Penicuik and served as President of the College from 1842 to 1844. From 1844 to 1857 he acted as Medical Inspector of Lunatic Asylums in Midlothian. In 1857 he published 'Testimonials in Favour of Robert Renton, M.D., F.R.C.P.E., for the Appointment of Inspector-General of Lunatic Asylums in Scotland, under the Contemplated Lunacy Act'. He died in 1884.
