Robert Muir

Sir Robert Muir was born on 5 July 1864, the son of the Rev. Robert Muir of Balfron, Stirlingshire. Educated at the University of Edinburgh, he graduated MA in 1884, MB CM in 1888 and MD with honours in 1890. He was appointed the first Professor of Pathology at the University of St Andrews and later became Professor of Pathology at the University of Glasgow, where he held the chair for thirty-eight years. An internationally respected pathologist, he made major contributions to the study of immunity and blood pathology and authored influential textbooks on morbid anatomy. He died on 30 March 1959.
