Robert Milne Murray was the son of a schoolteacher from Aberdeen. After completing an MA at the University of St Andrews, he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, earning his MB CM in 187. He began his career as an Assistant to Sir John Halliday Croom, which influenced his later specialisation in obstetrics. He was a long-term Lecturer in Diseases of Women at the Edinburgh School of Medicine and worked as a Physician in this field at several Edinburgh hospitals. He developed a number of electrical devices for medical use, which he released without patent. He died in 1904 aged forty-eight following pneumonia.
