Robert John Stewart McDowall was born in 1892 and qualified MB ChB from the University of Edinburgh in 1915. From 1919-21 he lectured in physiology at Edinburgh, receiving the Sir John Ellis Student Prize and the Parkin Prize. He later served as Lecturer at the University of Leeds and from 1923 as Professor of Physiology at King's College London, remaining until retirement in 1959. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh on 21 July 1925. His publications include 'The Control of the Circulation of the Blood' (1938), 'The Handbook of Physiology' (1944), and 'Whiskies of Scotland' (1967). He died on 12 January 1990 aged 97.
