Robert Fraser Calder Leith was born in 1854 and graduated MB CM with first-class honours from the University of Edinburgh in 1885. He briefly studied law before specialising in pathology, which he taught at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. He became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1891 and a Fellow in 1892. He lectured in pathology at the Edinburgh School of Medicine from 1892 to 1899 before being appointed Professor of Pathology and Bacteriology at Mason Science College, University of Birmingham. He held this post for twenty years and also served as Examiner for several universities. He died in North Berwick in 1936.
