Robert Cranston Low was born in Edinburgh in 1879, the son of Thomas Low. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating MB ChB in 1902. He later graduated MD in 1924, his thesis entitled 'Skin-Sensitiveness to Non-Bacterial Proteins and Toxins' being awarded a Gold Medal and subsequently published as a monograph. Low was appointed Consultant Physician to the Skin Department of the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1906 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1934. He served as President of the British Association of Dermatologists from 1936 to 1937. He died in Edinburgh in 1949.
