Robert Carmichael received his medical degree from the University of Leiden on 1 July 1694. He was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh on 3 December 1694. In 1695 he was admitted socius to the College, one of nine Fellows during a period of twenty-one months.
