Robert Briggs was baptised on 14 November 1768, the son of Allan Briggs of Scoonie, Fife. He was awarded an MA on 30 July 1803 and an MD on 12 September 1806 from the University of St Andrews. He was admitted a Licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh on 24 August 1788. He was admitted a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh on 18 December 1813 and was elected a Fellow on 3 May 1814. He was appointed to teach chemistry and chemical pharmacy at the University of St Andrews in 1811 and served as Professor of Medicine there from 4 March 1811 until his death on 10 July 1840, aged 72.
