Robert Bathgate Johnston

Robert Bathgate Johnston was born on 28 May 1875 in Glasgow. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1904, a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1912 and a Fellow in 1919. He held early posts at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Simpson Memorial Maternity Hospital and Chalmers Hospital, and served as Demonstrator of Anatomy at the Edinburgh School of Medicine. During the First World War he served as a Major in the RAMC at the 81st General Hospital. He later practised in London before retiring to Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, and died in Harare in 1959.

The main qualification issued by the College, awarded regularly since the College’s foundation. This qualification was granted based on demonstrated breadth of experience and did not require an individual to pass a certain examination.
