Robert Alexander Fleming was born in Dundee in 1862. He graduated MB CM with first-class honours from the University of Edinburgh in 1888 and completed postgraduate study in Vienna and Berlin, earning his MD with a gold medal in 1896. From 1897 to 1927 he worked at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, initially as Pathologist and later as Senior Physician. After retirement, he continued as Consulting Physician for a further twenty years. He served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the First World War. He was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1891 and elected a Fellow in 1892, later serving as President from 1927 to 1929. He died in 1947.
