Richard James Maitland Coffin

Richard James Maitland Coffin trained in London and Edinburgh and was a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, as well as a Licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries in London and Apothecaries' Hall in Dublin. He worked primarily in obstetrics, including as a Teacher of Obstetric Medicine at St John's House Maternity Home. He was closely involved in the volunteer ambulance movement, serving as Honorary Surgeon and Examiner to the St John Ambulance Brigade, Chief Officer of the Ambulance Department of the National Fire Brigade Union, and Chief District Surgeon and Examiner for the South Midlands District. He received several honours, including appointment as an Honorary Associate of the Order of St John of Jerusalem in England and as a Knight of the Royal Order of Christ of Portugal. He died in Sevenoaks in 1927.
