Richard Fernandez Freeborn was born in Oxford in 1823, the son of John James Simms Freeborn, a physician practising at 38 Broad Street. He trained at Oxford and St George's Hospital, London, matriculating from Oxford in 1847 and later obtaining his MD from Erlangen in 1860. He became a Licentiate of the College in 1849 and a Fellow in 1865. By 1861 he had taken over his father's practice at Broad Street and expanded it to include number 39. He married Clara Eliza Corbett in 1849 and had six children. He died in Oxford in 1883.
