Ralph Stockman was born in Leith and educated in Edinburgh, where he was awarded a gold medal for his MD in 1886. He began his career as a teacher at the Edinburgh Extramural School before being appointed Professor of Materia Medica, later termed pharmacology, at the University of Glasgow in 1897, a post he held until his retirement in 1936. He published a number of works, including 'Rheumatism and Arthritis' (1920). After retiring, he returned to Edinburgh, where he died in February 1946.
