Ralph Fawsett Ainsworth

Ralph Fawsett Ainsworth was born in 1811, the son of surgeon James Ainsworth, and educated at Manchester Grammar School. He began medical studies in 1828, training in Manchester, London and Berlin, where he obtained his MD. After travelling in Europe, he returned to the UK and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1837 and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1839. Ainsworth was also a Fellow of the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society and held numerous appointments in Manchester, including consulting physician to the Royal Infirmary Fever Wards, the Union Workhouse, the Lunatic Hospital at Cheadle, the Lunatic Asylum at Blackley, and the Salford and Pendleton Royal Hospital and Dispensary. He also lectured on medicine at the Pine Street School.
