Peter Ramsay graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 1817. He obtained his licence to practise in 1828 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh the same year. Ramsay later established a private practice in Liverpool and had been a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England since 1816.
