Patrick Hehir was born in County Clare in 1859, the son of Robert Martin Hehir of Ennis. He graduated MD from the University of Brussels in 1883 and obtained a Diploma in Public Health from the University of Cambridge in 1886. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1908. He joined the Indian Medical Service in 1886 and held senior administrative posts including Assistant Director and Deputy Director of Medical Services in Burma and Poona. During the First World War he served in senior command roles and was promoted to Surgeon-General in 1918. After retiring in 1920, he acted as Medical Advisor to the British Red Cross Society Mission to Greek Refugees. He died in 1937.
