Baird was born on 2 August 1772 in Ayrshire. He entered the Indian Medical Service as an assistant surgeon in 1798. He obtained his MD from the University of St Andrews on 7 March 1818 and was admitted a Licentiate of the College on 5 May 1818 and elected a Fellow on 4 August 1818. He later became Superintending Surgeon of the province of Gujarat and died in Bombay on 5 November 1821.
