Ormond Haldane Garland, the son of a Bailie of the burgh of Leith, trained in Edinburgh, earning his MB CM in 1868 and his MD in 1888. After a short period as Resident Surgeon at Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital, he spent most of his career as Surgeon to the Leith Police, also acting as an ambulance instructor. This work led to his election as an Honorary Life Member of the St Andrew's Ambulance Association. He lectured on Clinical Medicine at the Edinburgh School of Medicine for Women and published an early medical account of cocaine poisoning in The Lancet in 1895. He died in 1911 following a prolonged illness.
