Norman Scott Carmichael was born in Edinburgh, the son of James Carmichael, a physician. He graduated MB from the University of Edinburgh in 1905 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1913. In 1920 he was appointed Physician to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh, and Lecturer in Diseases of Children at the University of Edinburgh. After the Second World War he resumed private practice and served as Medical Superintendent at Leith Hospital. He was Surgeon-Apothecary to the King at Holyrood Palace and a member of the Royal Company of Archers. He died in Edinburgh in 1951.
