Lewis Quier Bowerbank

Lewis Quier Bowerbank was born on 26 August 1814, the son of Lewis Bowerbank, a Church of England rector in Jamaica. He received his MD from Edinburgh in 1836 and returned to Jamaica the same year to practise in Spanish Town. Following an unsuccessful application in 1858 for the post of Consulting Surgeon at Kingston Public Hospital, he published allegations of neglect and malpractice at the hospital and adjoining asylum. In the aftermath he played a key role in the foundation in 1861 of the new Jamaica Lunatic Asylum, later Bellevue Hospital, established on more progressive principles. He later served as Custos of Jamaica and was an ally of Governor Edward John Eyre during the Morant Bay rebellion of 1865. He died in Ealing, London, in 1880.
