Lewis Campbell Bruce received his medical qualifications from the University of Edinburgh in 1894. In 1899 he was appointed Superintendent of Perth District Mental Hospital, a position he held for six years before moving to Murthly Hospital in Perthshire, where he worked for over three decades. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1901. In 1906 he published 'Studies in Clinical Psychiatry'. During the First World War he served with the Royal Army Medical Corps, attaining the rank of Captain and serving in Gallipoli and Italy, for which he was awarded the Military Cross. He is credited with introducing thyroid treatment in the care of people with mental illness. Lewis Campbell Bruce died in 1945.
