Lawrence Whitaker Harrison was born in 1876 in Lancashire, the son of a general practitioner. He qualified MB ChB from the University of Glasgow in 1897. In 1899 he joined the Royal Army Medical Services and in 1909 took up the post of Pathologist and Researcher in venereal diseases at Rochester Row. In 1919 he was appointed Adviser in Venereal Diseases to the Ministry of Health and placed in charge of the venereal diseases clinic at St Thomas' Hospital, London. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh on 3 February 1925. He was a founding member of the Medical Society for the Study of Venereal Disease and served as President from 1923-25 and 1938-42. He was Joint Editor of the British Journal of Venereal Diseases from 1925-39 and Sole Editor from 1939-42. Harrison died in 1964.
