Kenneth Mackenzie Downie was born in Contin in 1845, the son of the minister of Contin. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and undertook further training in Vienna and Munich, graduating MB CM in 1866 and MD in 1875. He entered the Indian Medical Service in 1868 and rose to the rank of surgeon-lieutenant-colonel. His service included postings in Burma, Hazara and the North-West Frontier, and participation in the Ruby Mines Expedition. He died in Cannes, France, in 1912.
