John William Ballantyne

John William Ballantyne was born in Eskbank, Midlothian, and studied at the University of Edinburgh, where he was awarded a gold medal for his MD thesis in 1889. After serving as House Surgeon under Professor Simpson in the University Ward for Diseases of Women, he became Assistant Physician and later Full Physician at the Royal Maternity Hospital. He taught at the Edinburgh Extramural Medical School and later lectured in midwifery to women students. He published extensively on midwifery and antenatal disease, and his name is associated with Ballantyne's syndrome and Ballantyne-Runge syndrome. He died in Edinburgh in 1923.
