John Thomson was born in Edinburgh in 1856 and graduated MD from the University of Edinburgh in 1881. He held residency posts at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary before undertaking further study in Vienna and Berlin. In 1884 he was appointed Resident Medical Officer at the London Hospital for Sick Children. He returned to Edinburgh in 1886 as Physician to the New Town Dispensary and in 1889 became Physician to the Edinburgh Royal Hospital for Sick Children. He died in Edinburgh in 1926.
