John Smith was apprenticed at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1818 and studied at the University of Edinburgh from 1820 to 1823. In 1823 he entered the Indian Medical Service and graduated MD from the University of Edinburgh. Smith was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh on 12 October 1833.
