John Rutherford Gilmour

John Rutherford Gilmour was born in Edinburgh in 1871 and educated at George Watson's College. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating MB CM with first-class honours in 1894. After holding a resident post at the Edinburgh Infirmary and spending a short period in general practice, he joined Sir Thomas Clouston's staff at Morningside as an Assistant Physician and began his career in psychiatry. He later became Senior Assistant Physician under Dr Rutherford at the Crichton Royal Institution, Dumfries, where he remained until 1901. That year he was appointed by the West Riding County Council to direct the new mental hospital for private patients at Scalebor Park, Burley-in-Wharfedale. He served as Medical Superintendent from its opening in 1902 until his retirement in 1939. He died on 28 October 1942.
