John Rose Cormack

Sir John Rose Cormack was born in 1815 in Midlothian. He matriculated at the University of Edinburgh in 1829, initially studying arts before turning to medicine and receiving his MD in 1837. After further study in Paris, he returned to Edinburgh and was appointed physician to several institutions including the Royal Public Dispensary and the Royal Infirmary. In 1845 he moved to London and later, in 1869, to Paris, where he served as a military surgeon during the Franco-Prussian War. Cormack was knighted in 1872 and died in Paris in 1882.
