John Reid

John Reid was born in Bathgate in 1809. He matriculated at Edinburgh University to study classics and mathematics before transferring to medicine and graduating MD in 1830. Reid became assistant physician at the Edinburgh Infirmary in 1830 and studied in Paris from 1831 to 1832. In 1833 he became assistant to Robert Knox at Surgeons' Hall and later lecturer in physiology at the Edinburgh extramural school. In 1838 he was appointed pathologist to the Edinburgh Infirmary and in 1841 became Professor of Anatomy at the University of St Andrews. He died in St Andrews in 1849.
