John Ramsay obtained his MD from the University of Edinburgh on 12 September 1810. He entered the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1810 as a hospital mate, was promoted to assistant surgeon in 1811 and later to staff surgeon in 1822. He was admitted a Licentiate of the College on 16 May 1817 and elected a Fellow on 4 November 1817. He died in London on 8 April 1838.
