John Malcolm Farquharson was born c.1865, the eldest son of a medical practitioner in Tillicoultry. He was educated at Dollar Academy, Clackmannanshire, before studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 1887. After graduation he served as House Surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and undertook postgraduate study in Glasgow and Vienna. He was later appointed Assistant Surgeon in the Ear, Nose and Throat Department at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. He was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1901 and elected a Fellow in 1903. During the First World War he volunteered his services to the Scottish Medical Services Emergency Committee. He died in Edinburgh in 1936.
