John Macwhirter

John Macwhirter was born in 1783. In 1803 he worked in Calcutta as an assistant surgeon in the Indian Medical Service. He received his MD from the University of St Andrews on 6 January 1816 and subsequently returned to Scotland to establish a medical practice in Edinburgh. On 2 November 1824 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Macwhirter was also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and served as President of the Harveian Society of Edinburgh in 1827. He was President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh from 1831 to 1833. He died on 13 December 1854 at 4 Ainslie Place, Edinburgh.
