John Janet Kirk Duncanson was born circa 1846 near Dunfermline. He initially trained as an engineer before turning to medicine. He obtained his MD from Edinburgh in 1871, having trained in Heidelberg, where he specialised in gynaecology, and Vienna, where he developed an interest in otology. He played a central role in the establishment of the Ear Department of the Eye, Ear and Throat Infirmary in Cambridge Street, Edinburgh, where he served as surgeon for over thirty years. He became a Fellow of the College in 1874 and served in the 1st Edinburgh City Volunteer Artillery, attaining the rank of Surgeon Lieutenant Colonel. He died at Gullane on 12 March 1913.
