John Hughes Bennett was born in London and educated in Exeter. He began studying medicine in Edinburgh in 1833 and obtained his MD with a gold medal in 1837. A leading member of the Royal Medical Society, he regarded it as central to medical education in Scotland. After graduation he studied in Paris and founded the Parisian Medical Society.
