Sir John Halliday Croom was Professor of Midwifery at the University of Edinburgh. He earned his MB in 1868 and began working as Assistant to Alexander Simpson in 1870, later specialising in gynaecology and midwifery and overseeing the gynaecology wards at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. He gained his MD in 1882, receiving a gold medal. He began teaching as an Extramural Lecturer in 1878 and remained at the Edinburgh Medical School until succeeding Simpson as Professor of Midwifery in 1905. He retired in 1921 and published several works in his field, including 'Minor Gynaecological Operations and Appliances'. He died in 1925.
