John George Sinclair Coghill

John George Sinclair Coghill was born in Caithness in 1834 and obtained his MD from Edinburgh in 1857, his studies having been briefly interrupted by naval service during the Crimean War. After graduating, he worked as a demonstrator of anatomy at the University of Glasgow from 1858 to 1861 before moving to Shanghai, where he served as municipal medical officer and consulting physician. He returned to Edinburgh in 1869 to work under Sir James Simpson but left in 1875 to become Physician to the National Hospital for Consumption, Ventnor, on the Isle of Wight. His publications include 'New operation for vesico vaginal fistula' and 'Pathology and treatment of irritable uterus', both published in 1859. He died at Ventnor on 5 June 1899.
