John Dixon Comrie

John Dixon Comrie was born in Peterhead in 1875, the son of a medical practitioner of the same name. He was educated at George Watson's College and the University of Edinburgh, graduating MB in 1899. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1906 and later graduated MD in Edinburgh. During this period, Comrie became editor of Black's Medical Dictionary, overseeing the first seventeen editions. He held appointments at both the Edinburgh and Glasgow Royal Infirmaries and undertook further study in Berlin and Vienna. On returning to Edinburgh, he worked as a pathologist and physician at the Royal Infirmary and as Consulting Physician to several local hospitals, including the Deaconess Hospital and the Princess Margaret Rose Orthopaedic Hospital. He died in 1939.
