John Cumming was born circa 1864. He was educated at Portsoy Public School, Aberdeenshire, before beginning his medical training at the University of Edinburgh in 1893. He was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1900 and elected a Fellow in 1903. During the First World War he served as a Major in the Royal Army Medical Corps.
