John Craigie

John Craigie was born in 1748. He joined the Indian Medical Service in 1772 as an Assistant Surgeon, rising to the rank of Surgeon in 1780. He was awarded an MD by Marischal College in 1788, and became a Fellow of this College in 1789. He died onboard a ship returning to Europe in 1795. His wife, Jacoba Helena van As was a descendent of the first enslaved woman in the Dutch Cape, and a number of their children entered the Indian military or civil services.
