John Clark

John Clark was born on 8 July 1784, the second son of John Clark of Nunland, near Dumfries. He received his MD from the University of St Andrews in 1805 and later obtained an MD from the University of Edinburgh in 1821. He served as a military surgeon throughout the Peninsular War and returned to Britain with the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Military Hospitals, stationed at Port Pitt in 1830. He was appointed a Knight of the Royal Guelphic Order of Hanover (KH) in 1833, which did not confer a British title. In 1824 he married Mary, daughter and heiress of John Gilchrist MD, and they had five children. He retired to Speddoch, Dumfries, and died in Naples in December 1845.
