John Cheyne

John Cheyne was born in Leith in 1777. He obtained his MD at the University of Edinburgh in 1795. Cheyne then took up the position of military surgeon, travelling to England and Ireland before returning to Scotland in 1799 to work at the ordnance hospital in Leith Fort. In 1809 he moved to Dublin to establish a private medical practice, where he remained for over twenty years. He also served as physician to Meath Hospital, professor of physic at the Irish College of Surgeons, and physician to the House of Industry. In 1820 he was appointed physician-general to the forces in Ireland. In 1831 Cheyne moved to Buckinghamshire, where he died in 1836.
