John Challice

John Challice was born in Horsham, Sussex, in 1815 and obtained his MD from King's College, Aberdeen, in 1850. In 1856 he became Medical Officer of Health for Bermondsey, a post he held until his death. He wrote extensively on public health and cholera, publishing works including 'Should the cholera come, what ought to be done?' (1848) and 'How to avoid the cholera' (1849). He married the author Annie Emma Armstrong in 1841 and died in London in 1863.
