John Alexander Smith was born in Edinburgh in 1818. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating MD in 1840, and established a general practice in Edinburgh's West End while also pursuing wide interests in archaeology, natural history and antiquities. Smith became a Fellow of the College in 1864, serving as Treasurer from 1874 until his death and also holding senior roles in several societies including the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and the Royal Physical Society of Edinburgh. Smith published extensively on archaeological finds, ancient artefacts and zoology. He died in Edinburgh in 1883.
