Jan Christiaan Smuts

Jan Christiaan Smuts, Prime Minister of South Africa from 1919-1924, was born 24 May 1870 to Jacobus Abraham Smuts and Catharina Petronella Gerhardina de Vries. He was a South African politician who played a major role in the creation of the Union of South Africa and led the country into WWI. Additionally, he was a supporter of the League of Nations and later the United Nations. Throughout his time in politics, he was a strong supporter of segregation and paternalist policies. He was awarded honorary fellowship for the role he played during WWI. He died 11 September 1950.
