James Williamson Martin trained in Edinburgh, earning his MB CM in 1885 and his MD in 1887. After a brief period as Physician to the Cowgate Dispensary, he spent the remainder of his career in Dumfries, where he served as Medical Officer to the Post Office. During the shortage of doctors in the First World War, he was commissioned as a Temporary Lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps from 1915 to 1916. He died in Dumfries in December 1919.
