James William Hope

John William Hope was born in Hay-on-Wye, Wales, and trained at Westminster Hospital and St Bartholomew's Hospital, London. He became a Licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries and a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1874 before emigrating to Australia. There he held several posts, including Medical Officer and Public Vaccinator to the York District, and Medical Officer to Fremantle Prison and Invalid Depot and Rottnest Penal Colony. He was also involved in sponsoring gold mining expeditions in Western Australia and served as a Justice of the Peace. He died in Bath, Somerset, in 1918 while completing national service.
