James Taylor Grant was educated at James Gillespie's School and George Watson's College, Edinburgh, before commencing medical studies at the University of Edinburgh in 1893. He graduated MB in 1897 and was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1899, becoming a Fellow in 1903. During the First World War he served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps.
