James Stitt Thomson trained in Edinburgh and at the University of St Andrews and began his career as Medical Officer of Health in Dalkeith. In 1896 he moved to Lincoln, where he worked as Physician at Lincoln County Hospital and Consulting Physician to the Lincoln General Dispensary. He also served as Surgeon to the Great Northern, Great Eastern, and Great Central and Midland Railway Companies, and as Medical Referee under the Workmen's Compensation Act and for several life assurance companies. He died in Edinburgh in September 1910 aged fifty-seven.
